“I decided to write Cake Mix: Learning to love all your ingredients after reading as a volunteer in elementary school classrooms in Los Angeles and realizing how few stories featured characters of color, let alone those who are mixed-race. Racial identity is a strong marker for conversations and community building, so I wanted to share how to better understand people who check off more than one box.”
